The emergence of the sour.

The microbrewery trend has changed how Americans drink beer. The lagers and pilsners that dominated the drinking landscape for so many years have given way to more complex brews, and IPAs are the new king. But there’s another style of beer that’s seen a huge boom in popularity – the sour.

And in Kansas City, there’s one brewery that’s become synonymous with this style – Crane Brewing in Raytown. Specializing in sour beers and European-style saisons, they brew inventive, vibrant beers sure to tickle the palate of the most discerning beer drinkers.

Located in an unassuming cinderblock building just south of Raytown’s downtown, it’s not the type of place you might not expect to find such amazing beers. But don’t judge a bottle by the label. Crane Brewing’s Saison is a farmhouse-style field beer with an amber color and a slight fruity finish. Unlike some saisons, it’s highly drinkable and enjoyable glass after glass.

Or try out a gose, they offer both orange and grapefruit. Tangy and zesty, with a touch of salt, they’re equally at home on the lake or at the dining table. If something lighter is what you’re craving, you’ll want the Apricot Weiss. Its fruity aroma belies its complexity, with the perfect amount of sweetness balancing against tartness and acidity.

With over a dozen beers to choose from, including seasonals, Crane offers something for every drinker. Enjoy them in the onsite taproom, in select bars around town, or pick up a six pack in stores on either side of the state line. You’ll be glad you did.
