Brewing on tradition

Kansas City is known for a few things, namely beer, beef and barbecue. It comes from a history as a destination for cattle, where ranchers would end their journey down in the West Bottoms, hungry and thirsty and looking for sustenance. Today there’s a local brewery carrying on this tradition, Stockyards Brewing Company.

Located in what was once the famous Golden Ox at 1600 Gennessse, the relative newcomer to the Kansas City craft scene retains the charm of its former occupant, while serving a fantastic range of brews to suit any taste.

Start off with a flight to sample a variety of the dozen or so beers on tap. The Smoked Imperial Pilsner is a creative take on traditional German lager, with a smooth, smokey finish unlike anything you’ve had. The West Bottoms IPA is a medium-bodied take on pale ales, a mix between Midwest and West Coast IPA-styles.

The Hefeweizen is a slightly fruity, incredibly refreshing beer that’s easy to drink and incredibly tasty. But the beer you absolutely must try is the Black IPA. A roasty, hoppy delight, it’s a complex brew that doesn’t overwhelm and is sure to please any palate.

If you’re not in the mood for beer, Stockyards has a full-bar and their expert staff whip up some mean cocktails. The old-fashioned in particular is one of the best in town, so if you’re trying to embrace your inner Don Draper, that’s the cocktail for you.

With a variety of bar snacks to choose from for those feeling peckish, queso, meat and cheese platters and chips, Stockyards is the perfect place to relax and share a few drinks with friends.
