Brewery Spotlight: McCoy's Public House

Brewery Spotlight: McCoy's Public House

Fur-friendly fun in Westport

Pop quiz, hotshot: It’s a beautiful summer evening. You want to go out somewhere, socialize and kick back a few cold ones. But you’ve been out all day and your dog has been home by himself. What do you do?

Easy there, Keanu, no need to sweat. Luckily for you (and every other dog lover in the metro), Kansas City has the perfect solution. McCoy’s Public House has one of the best dog-friendly patios in town.

Located in the heart of Westport, it has the perfect combination of atmosphere, fantastic food and great beer brewed right in-house.

Speaking of beer, McCoys has an ever-rotating cast to choose from. If you’re a fan of saisons, you have to try the Good Farmhouse Ale. Fruity and flavorful, it’s the ideal mix of tartness, complexity and drinkability.  If brown ales are more your style, the Hogpound is unmatched. Medium-bodied with a sweet and slightly nutty finish, it’s the kind of beer you’ll find yourself drinking all night.

And then there’s the Ginger Shandy. But this isn’t one of those sickeningly sweet pre-bottled shandies. This is the real-deal, made with ginger and lemonade for an unmistakably light and refreshing brew. It’s a taste of summer itself.

Of course, any discussion of McCoy’s (and its neighboring sister The Foundry), would be remiss without mentioning the food. This isn’t your typical greasy bar fare consisting of an assortment of frozen meats and cheeses dropped in a fire. McCoy’s is a legit gastro pub.

Their burgers are among the best in the city, their pizza is delicious, and their mac & cheese is legendary. Seriously. It’s that good. Dress up the original with your choice of toppings including caramelized onions, bacon and blackened chicken, or choose from one of their gourmet versions like the spicy Mac Diablo, featuring chorizo, jalapeño sofrito, caramelized onion and tomato with a tortilla-cornbread crust.

Whatever you’re in the mood for, McCoy’s won’t disappoint.

What are you waiting for? Round up your friends and head on over to McCoy’s. And don’t forget, if you can’t bring your four-legged partners with you, be sure to take them something home from the Beer Paws vending machine.
